the soul of money (and why you're probably thinking about it all wrong)
want to work with the soul of money? start here
guys, omg. so much has been percolating this week. i haven’t even published a post this week (until now) because my mind has been racing at a million miles per second and i haven’t been able to harness that energy into a directly channeled thought. i feel so tapped in, so in the flow, and very much one with the creative energy source of the universe.
in fact, this morning in yoga, i saw something i’ve never seen before in my mind’s eye which seemed to unlock a whole new realm. my eyes were closed, we were in a juicy yin pose (totally restorative, if you’re not familiar with yoga), mantra music was blasting… and with my eyes closed, i saw a golden door. truly, everything around it was black except the door itself was illuminated.
when i looked closer, i saw a miniature version of myself standing at the edge of the door, inviting my conscious self in. this mini version of me, still blonde and bubbly and truly warm the way she was waving me in, was not quite me—she was my higher self. beyond the door, i could clearly see that she was guiding me toward the akashic records. toward the fiction book i’ve been working on for the last few months but have been recently blocked by, and of course… toward something i’ve been blogging a lot about lately, the soul of money.
when it came time to leave that vibrational realm and come back to the room, i told my higher self i’d be back. and she said, “no problem, this is always here for you. come back any time.” and now, i’m at a coffee shop with tears in my eyes thinking about what a special moment that was, and how much beautiful access we all have to the other realms at all times.
SO… how could i NOT write today’s post about the soul of money itself, how to tap into it, and how to unlock its never-ending, effervescent flow? this ideology is for everyone, by the way. whether you’re trying to up level from success to super success, or whether you haven’t quite hit your stride with financial abundance yet but you know in your gut and soul that you are so deserving. (because, it’s true, we all are. and YES, that includes you.)
and now, without further ado… let’s get right the heck into it. THE SOUL OF MONEY!!!!
**addendum: hearing from so so many of you that this post changed your life means the world to me—it’s why i do what i do, and i can’t thank you enough. keep telling me all your thoughts below!! i read every single one!!
the soul of money has been one of my favorite topics for a while. no really, like a long time. you can watch this podcast episode with my dad and i where we go super deep on it, and also check out this video of me with the author of the soul of money, lynne twist at a goop wellness event many years ago!!
wow, look how different i look with long hair that i took many years off of even highlighting at that time!! this was 2019. :) wow wow.
it was so cool to be in the presence of the woman who had written the book that explained so much about my lifelong relationship with money and mirrored it back to myself.
the whole premise of “the soul of money” is that money, you guessed it, has a SOUL and should be treated like a friend. generosity comes back to you tenfold. basically: money is energy, it moves with your intention, and the hoarding/scarcity mentality is what kills the flow. very much aligned with everything we already believe and live on this side of the internet.
and here’s my honest truth, and i fully understand that this might come off as unrelatable. but i’m not here to be relatable, i’m here to expand you. so if this strikes you as annoying in any way, check yourself and instead allow it to be expansive if you don’t have a similar story….
my experience with money:
i have never in my life had a weird, negative, or complicated relationship with money. like, ever. even when i probably should have. it never felt hard or heavy or loaded to me, and as such i didn’t build my brand from a scarcity mindset. and that’s not to say that i always had a lot—even when i had barely $2,000 to my name when i first moved to LA to begin blogging full-time (and my family had just recently lost everything in a hellacious Ponzi scheme)… i had blind faith that everything would work out. to my credit (and much to my father’s dismay, LOL) i never once worried that it wouldn’t work out. and that trust, i feel, was the secret sauce.
during this time i can confidently say that for probably five years straight i never once even opened my bank account… which i am not recommending (what was i doing/thinking?!?!), but i didn't feel the need to because i genuinely wasn’t attached to the number. i knew it was flowing. i treated myself when i wanted to… solo trips to bali, every gym membership a girl could desire, a nice apartment in brentwood, nearly every meal at erewhon, you get it. i was also young and single with no kids or even a relationship to factor in, so at the time this worked well for me.
when my business really started to take off, it continued on a steep upward trajectory in part—i believe—because i was so unattached and so in the flow. i remember launching one of my big spiritual courses back in the day, and making more than six-figures a day… multiple days in a row. which was awesome, don’t get me wrong, but the numbers didn’t matter so much to me because like i said… i never checked my bank account. all i cared about was that we had hundreds and hundreds of avid course members who were ready to grow and expand their spirituality!!
plus, i’m not a huge spender on frivolous things (aside from what i mentioned above about travel and food and wellness) so it’s not like i was about to go out and spend it on a G-wagon or a Birkin. those things are great but especially back then… i just did not care about spending money in that way. i kind of still don’t, unless it’s very specific to what i genuinely want!
but in my own ways, whenever and however i wished, i spent believing it would come back tenfold, because it always had. and it continued to. and i also saved, a LOT, not out of scarcity but out of respect for money itself and my hard work. i always wanted to have something to fall back on. i wanted to take time off when i had babies in the future (which i did do, here and there), buy a house, all the things.
lastly, i refused to speak badly about money. i still do. i will not do it. money is energy and i believe everything with energy (so everything in general) can hear us. so once i got together with jonathan, i taught him this as well. he was raised very differently than i was and didn’t hold the same ideals about “the soul of money” and he’s taught me a lot about how to teach others… since the whole journey for him has been about unlearning the scarcity mindset.
with him, i started teaching him that we don’t say, “we can’t afford that.” or “that’s too expensive.” or even, “we could never have that.” or, “the world has just gotten so much harder, when our parents were young they could live off of one income and buy a house and send their kids to nice schools and it’s just not like that anymore.”
and look—i’m not saying that none of those things are true. but there is a much more aligned, expansive, and respectful (to money) way to say it, so i’ve instilled that reframe for him.
instead of saying any of those things, we say, “i am so looking forward to the day when that’s easy for me to buy, because i know it’s coming,” “when my business takes off…” (instead of “if), “i could buy that if i wished, but it’s not actually a priority for me,” “it’s easy to make money in this world we live in—technology has given us so many more options to be entrepreneurial and it’s so exciting!”
going deeper on the soul of money:
i will acknowledge that of course growing up with a certain amount of privilege, i was able to develop this mindset of abundance vs. scarcity. but i also think it’s a bit of a personality thing. my parents have been very successful—but my dad desperately has wanted to instill in me a “fear” and scarcity about money (because that’s just his vibe as a workaholic, self-made, triple fire sign!!!) that i never, ever allowed in. especially after the Ponzi scheme, he tried and tried. he wanted to light a fire under my ass… but it wasn’t working. because i’m a flowy kind of gal, and i didn’t want to think that way. and i had that fire under me to begin with, thankfully.
i fully acknowledge that while my upbringing has a lot to do with my financial outlook, i believe spiritually we all come to this earth with a certain set of things that come easy to us and a certain set of things that come hard. abundance… not hard for me. health and feeling good in my body… damn near impossible for me. but that’s a different story for another day.
the greatest compliment my dad EVER gave me was on my podcast in our soul of money episode… when he said that even if i run out of money i will always be able to make more because i have a genuine talent. 🥹 the talent being writing and connecting with you guys. that meant so much to me. and i know in my bones the same thing is true for everyone on earth, even him, it’s just that most don’t realize what their talents are until it’s too late.
but back to the mindset thing. the thing about hoarding or obsessing or putting money on some kind of pedestal? it never appealed to me. even as a kid. because the second you idolize something, you’ve already told the universe you don’t actually have it. and somehow, even at a very young age, i inherently felt that.
and i think that’s actually where a lot of people get tripped up. they think the “going deep” on money means dissecting every childhood wound around it, every limiting belief, every time their parents stressed about bills, every time they heard, “that’s impossible for us.” and look, i’m not dismissing that work. it’s important and for some, very necessary. but i also want to offer a different possibility.
what if some of us just came in wired differently around this? what if the work isn’t always about healing something broken, but about trusting something that was never broken to begin with?
because here’s what i know about myself. i came into this life with an innate knowing that i was taken care of. that the universe was not withholding from me. that abundance was not something i had to earn through suffering or prove myself worthy of. it was just... mine. and yours. and everyone’s, honestly, if they can get quiet enough to feel that.
the golden door i saw in yoga this morning? that’s what it felt like. like my higher self has always been standing at the threshold going “come on, it’s all in here, what are you waiting for.” and the only thing that ever keeps any of us from walking through is the story we’re telling about why we can’t.
if you’re here, i know you’re ready to reach the next level of success. it’s all relative.
and then there’s the whole creating goals to reach the next level of success, which i find so exciting. remember how i said i didn’t check my bank account for years? that worked great for me when i was young and single. now, i’m a mom in my mid-thirties providing for my family, taking care of two kids, growing my business to new heights, owning a home, and beyond. my goals are far different than they used to be, and they require a different level of awareness to my finances.
so now, i actually check my bank account every day. i like to know what’s going on. i spent the weekend creating an income spreadsheet and an expense spreadsheet for 2026 and filled it all in line by line, HAVING FUN WHILE DOING IT… who am i!?!??!?!
so there’s no hard and fast rules here. if you feel it would be advantageous to you to take the stress off of yourself and not get so wrapped up in the numbers, try it! if you feel it would benefit you to become hyper-aware, in a non-obsessive way… try that! the beauty is, it’s going to be different for each of us.
the soul of money wants you to have fun making it… it doesn’t want you to be miserable. sometimes people will make a lot of money doing a job they hate, and at least they’re getting that financial reward, but they will have to face the facts one day about spending their lives doing something they don’t enjoy doing—and it will begin to show up in other areas. every time. like health, relationships, happiness, ability to manifest in general, etc.
basically, overall, money wants us to be in alignment. and that’s been my latest goal. after building a successful brand and business for the last 13 years as a solo entrepreneur, how could i then peel back those layers to stop doing the stuff that i hated within the business, and focus more on what i loved? even if i took a financial dip for a while, i knew earlier this year that that’s what i had to do for my mental health. (and i knew full well, that the happier i was the more money i would make… but let’s just say everyone around me wasn’t sure about that—haha.)
since then, i’ve built my substack to over $250k annually (you can read more about that here) and counting. and i have huge goals for where i want to be at the end of the year! and i want to be clear about something, because i think it matters. i did come in with an existing platform. a big one. so i’m not going to pretend i started from zero, because that would be doing a disservice to people who actually are starting from zero and wondering why the “i started with nothing” stories aren’t mapping onto their experience.
but here’s what a big platform does not automatically give you: money. readers’ trust. the desire from your audience to leap from free content for over a decade into paying for blog posts. i have watched creators with millions of followers make almost nothing on substack (or on IG also, for that matter). because the platform is not the thing. the energy behind it is the thing. the belief that what you’re offering is worth paying for. the refusal to undercharge because you’re scared people will leave. the generosity of spirit that makes people want to give back to you because you’ve given so freely to them.
that is the soul of money!!!! i also believe that part of having respect for money means walking away from making money in the ways that are soul sucking. my podcast, though i loved it for many years and will return to it eventually, was starting to suck my soul. misaligned brand campaigns were sucking my soul. speaking engagements were sucking my soul. and i finally asked myself… what if i just STOPPED doing all of that?
that’s when substack took off. that’s also when my going viral course (teaching you exactly how to grow on socials, after i grew 220k followers in five months) took off. and my peptide content. but more important to me than anything… this space. my writing hub. the career i’ve been dreaming of since i was a little girl.
but now, i know you’re ready to apply this to your own life!!! so let’s get into that
so, how do you actually apply this?
first, and i cannot stress this enough: stop saying things out loud that you do not want to be true. “i could never afford that.” “money is so hard to come by.” “rich people are just lucky.” every single time you say something like that, you are quite literally telling money to stay away from you. and it listens. so starting today, catch yourself. reframe it. you don’t have to lie to yourself and say “i’m a millionaire!” if you’re not there yet. but you can say “i’m so excited for the day that’s easy for me.” that’s true. and it’s open. and it lets the flow in.
second, figure out what YOUR relationship with money actually looks like right now. not what you wish it looked like, not what it looked like for your parents, not what some finance bro on the internet told you it should look like. yours. are you a “don’t look at the bank account and trust the flow” person? or are you someone who genuinely feels safer and more empowered when you know exactly what’s coming in and going out? neither is wrong. i’ve been both, you now know, at different seasons of my life, and both worked because the energy behind them was the same. curiosity, not fear.
third, be GENEROUS. i know this one freaks people out, especially if money feels tight. but this is the one is a hill i will die on (and lynne twist talks a lot about it!). give freely. tip well. buy the thing for your friend. donate when you feel called. not from a place of performance or martyrdom (and for the love of god you don’t need to post about ittttt), but from a genuine place of “there is more where this came from.” because there is. and the more you act like there is, the more there will be.
and finally, find what makes money fun for you. for me right now it’s fiction, substack, courses, peptides, social media, spreadsheets (LOL), genuinely, which my twenty-five year old self would absolutely not believe. for you it might be a vision board of what you’re building toward, or a savings goal that excites you, or simply deciding to enjoy the process of making it rather than white-knuckling your way to some finish line that keeps moving.
soon i’ll share a huge savings goal i had that manifested two weeks ago into reality… something i am soooo excited to talk more about but i feel like it needs its own post!
most of all—the soul of money doesn’t want you exhausted and grasping. it wants you lit up and open. and when you get there, even just a little bit, you will be amazed at how fast things start to move.
so…. what do you think?! what does your relationship with money look like? are you going to instill some of these practices, or are you more like me and you’ve operated by the soul of money for a long time (maybe throughout lifetimes)? whatever your experience looks like, i want to know. there is space for all of it.
we all have different strengths and weaknesses for a reason, so if you’re not there yet with the financial abundance side of things, do NOT feel bad. you are right on time. <3 and i wanna hear from you, so spill it below!
and if you are into this kind of stuff, read the abundance code next!! it’s your EXACT astrological blueprint to becoming a magnet for money & abundance!!!!

I love this so much Jordan, all of it. Especially the reframe of statements. Because of course I do my best to speak positive, but it’s amazing how those negative statements can slip in, in the background. Even though I’ve had those run in the background of my mind from time to time I couldn’t agree more, with the generosity piece! When my grandma was in the physical, she used to always say, you must have both hands open. One hand is for giving, and one hand is for receiving. If only one hand is open, the circle cannot be complete. They must both be open. She was the youngest of 11 and came from hardly anything and during the Great Depression they would pass out whatever little food they had to the men walking the streets, looking for work. A fellow libra as well and a continual guide for me and sharing, beauty, love and generosity!
Thank you for doing the same 💞
How did you shift your husband’s thoughts around money? My husband is in his 50’s and we’ve been married 18 years and he still talks like that and I try and try. He’s so stuck in his ways.
Really great article too! ✨💫💕
